Who was Gaudí?
Antonio Gaudí (1852-1926) is one of the most admired architects of the twentieth century. He is well known as the face of Catalan architecture. All his artwork was inspired by his fascination with the Orient and neogothic to his affinity for naturalism and specific geometric forms.
He considered every detail of his creations and integrated into his architecture such crafts as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging, and carpentry. He also introduced new techniques in the treatment of materials, such as trencadís, which used waste ceramic pieces.
Gaudí died while still working on the Sagrada Familia on June 10, 1926, in Barcelona, Spain.
Interesting facts about Gaudí’s life:
Well-known as God's Architect due to the many religious images that are seeing in his works.
Never got married.
7 of his works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO between 1984 and 2005.
His first project was to make lampposts in the Plaza Real (Royal Plaza).
What is so special about the Sagrada Familia?
It is the most visited place in Spain, receiving 3 million visits per year. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
It is considered The Gaudìs Masterpiece. The construction began in 1882 and is estimated to be fishing in 2030.
It will be 172,5 meters high. Just 1 meter shorter than Montjuic Mountain. Gaudí believed that nothing man-made should ever be higher than God's work.
It was designed to enable its construction even after Gaudí's death. Gaudí thought that any architect could understand his plans and drawings of the structure even after his death.
In 2019, it finally got legal permission to be constructed, 137 years after its first stone was laid.
The church has 3 different facades with different meanings.
